A Study for Submerged Bar Beach Renourishment

Brevard County authorized a study to determine if constructing a “sandbar” in shallow water may be an economically feasible option for beach restoration and shore protection while being less impactive to marine turtle nesting behavior and potentially resulting in temporary augmentation of a surf break. The study focuses specifically on the South Beaches shoreline of Brevard County. No preferred course of action related to this study has been determined at this time. The study can be downloaded below:

Assessment of Possible MSBU to Fund Shore Protection in the South Beaches

In response to critical erosion and citizen requests, the Board of County Commissioners authorized a study on November 17, 2008 to determine how the benefits and proportional costs of shore protection in the South Beaches might be distributed among property owners using a Municipal Services Benefit Unit (MSBU). This study considered six shore protection alternatives ranging from dune maintenance to full scale beach nourishment and a seventh alternative for strategic acquisition. No preferred course of action has been determined at this time. The study report and appendices can be downloaded below:

South Reach Renourishment

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLDD) began renourishing the beaches in Indialantic and Melbourne Beach on February 14 and successfully completed the project on April 17, 2010.  The project placed 636,411 cubic yard of sand along the 3.8 mile South Reach to provide storm damage protection and maintain recreational beaches to support the local tourism based economy.

2009 FEMA Sand and Sea Oat Project

The FEMA Sand Project to restore 2008 erosion losses associated with Tropical Storm Fay began on January 19, 2009.  All phases of the sand project were completed by St. Cloud contractor, CKA LLC, on March 23rd.  For more information regarding sand placement, click here.

Immediately after sand placement, Aquatic Plants of Florida, Inc. began the installation of sea oats.  The planting of sea oats helps trap windblown sand which builds the dunes, reducing the risk of future erosion.  The sea oat installation was completed on March 30th.  For more information regarding the installation of sea oats, click here.

CM3P Working Group VII will meet in January 2011.

The seventh Brevard County Comprehensive Maritime Management Master Plan (CM3P) Working Group will focus on the safe and proper operation of vessels.  Meetings will be held every other Wednesday.  All meetings start at 5 PM in the Natural Resources Management Office Conference Room at the Government Center, 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, Building A, 2nd floor, Room 219.

Stormwater Rule Updates

The Brevard County Natural Resources Management Office's Watershed Management Program seeks to revise and update the Stormwater Management Criteria to be consistent with current State standards and policies.  Workshops will be held in the near future to gather comments and alternatives to these proposed regulation updates. Artificial Surfing Reef Feasibility Study

In response to significant community interest, Brevard County commissioned a feasibility study for constructing multi-purpose surfing reefs to reduce beach erosion, improve surfing conditions and increase associated recreational opportunities.  Study results were presented to the public on November 19, 2008 at the Viera Government Center.
